The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, delivered through the Department of Teacher Education, equips future educators with skills for socially just teaching methods, fostering cultural awareness, advancing democratic education, and building subject mastery for urban and suburban school settings. The curriculum also trains candidates to effectively teach multilingual students and those with special requirements. Participants will establish nurturing classrooms grounded in social-emotional learning while gaining hands-on team-teaching opportunities alongside experienced mentor educators. Additionally, candidates will create, implement, and document classroom research projects.
Those enrolled in the Critical Bilingual Concentration will deepen their expertise by applying MAT competencies to contemporary bilingual education challenges. This specialized track provides focused training to develop bilingual educators who can drive meaningful change and serve as community leaders.
