As one of humanity's earliest academic pursuits, mathematics serves as a fundamental tool across diverse domains including cryptography, computer graphics, operations research, engineering, and scientific disciplines. Mathematics majors develop the ability to articulate mathematical concepts clearly while mastering computational techniques, modeling approaches, and technological applications to address real-world challenges. Our Mathematics and Statistics Department provides comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs that equip graduates for careers in industry or teaching positions at secondary schools and community colleges. Beyond the traditional BA in mathematics, we feature a specialized BS in applied mathematics designed for technical professions, which includes hands-on research opportunities through our Center for Applied Mathematics, Computation and Statistics (CAMCOS). The department also administers four distinct master's programs: both MS and MA degrees in mathematics.
Graduate students can pursue an MA in Mathematics, MS in Mathematics, or MS in Statistics. Each mathematics graduate program mandates completion of 30 course units, supplemented by either passing two comprehensive examinations or completing a thesis/writing project under faculty guidance. The statistics master's program requires a minimum of 36 course units. Our faculty expertise spans numerous specialties including algebra, applied mathematics, dynamical systems, linear algebra, graph theory, combinatorics, statistics, and mathematics education research.
