The Master of Arts in Communication Studies, delivered by the Department of Communication Studies, is an intensive 35-unit curriculum offering advanced exploration of communication theory, ethics, research methodologies, and their practical application in professional and academic settings. This program covers diverse fields including Intercultural Communication, Organizational Communication, Performance Studies, Cultural Studies, Rhetoric, Interpersonal and Small Group Communication, and Crisis and Conflict Resolution. Students develop a sophisticated grasp of communication as a social process, equipping them for corporate and non-profit careers or advanced academic pursuits. Some participate in college-level instruction through the Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) initiative. Graduates frequently pursue doctoral degrees, academic positions, or diverse professional opportunities throughout Silicon Valley and elsewhere.
Students can be admitted in either classified or conditionally classified standing. To be admitted to the Master of Arts in Communication Studies program in classified status, an applicant must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better in their last 60 units, and possess a baccalaureate degree in Communication Studies, or related field in the social sciences, humanities, or arts from an accredited U.S. or international university.
