The MA Chemistry program is tailored for individuals aiming to expand their chemistry expertise beyond undergraduate studies. This program suits: (1) aspiring community college chemistry instructors, (2) certified high school teachers with classroom experience, (3) professionals pursuing careers in chemical sales, technical librarianship, or science writing, and (4) candidates with substantial research backgrounds. Note: The MA degree isn't advised for those without prior research experience who intend to lead chemical research projects.
Students must have a bachelor's degree be in chemistry or an intimately related science (e.g., chemical physics, biochemistry, materials science). In all cases, however, incoming students must have had the equivalent of 40 semester units of undergraduate chemistry including at least 10 units of general chemistry, 10 units of organic chemistry, 4 units of analytical chemistry, and 4 units of physical chemistry. A grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the chemistry coursework is preferred. In addition, admission to the Chemistry MA program requires the general GRE and at least two, but preferably three, letters of recommendation.
