Advanced certificate programs provide post-baccalaureate students with specialized coursework designed to achieve a particular, practical objective. To qualify for admission to an advanced certificate program, applicants must either fill out an intake form or apply via CalState Apply, along with submitting official transcripts (demonstrating completion of a U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or its international equivalent). A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 is required.
Participants must achieve at least a 3.0 GPA in all advanced certificate courses, with no grade below a C. Only 4 units of coursework with a C grade can be applied toward the certificate, and a maximum of 4 units may be retaken. Lower-division undergraduate courses do not qualify for advanced certificates. Up to 30% of graduate degree program units (such as 9 units in a 30-unit Master's program) can be transferred from another institution or completed through Open University (including advanced certificate courses) at SJSU, subject to departmental approval. Grading requirements may affect the transferability of credits to degree programs (University Policy S16-17).
