Advanced certificate programs provide post-baccalaureate students with specialized coursework designed to achieve a targeted, practical objective. To qualify for admission to an advanced certificate program, applicants must complete an intake form or submit an application via CalState Apply, along with official transcripts demonstrating completion of a U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (or its international equivalent). A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 is required.
Participants must achieve at least a 3.0 GPA across all advanced certificate coursework, with no grade below a C in any class. Only 4 units of coursework with a C grade may be applied toward the certificate, and students may repeat up to 4 units. Lower-division undergraduate courses do not qualify for advanced certificates. With departmental approval, up to 30% of graduate degree program units (such as 9 units for a 30-unit Master's program) can be transferred from another institution or completed through SJSU's Open University (including advanced certificate courses). Grading requirements may affect the transferability of credits to degree programs (as outlined in University Policy S16-17).
