This program prepares students to become physical education teachers at the secondary school level. The BS in Kinesiology with Teaching Preparation, administered by the Department of Kinesiology, is recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) as an approved Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP) for demonstrating subject matter competency (SMC). Achieving SMC is essential for admission to a single-subject credential program in physical education. Those opting not to pursue this degree can demonstrate SMC by passing all sections of the CCTC-approved subject matter tests or through a combination of post-bachelor's coursework and examinations.
Certain requirements apply, including maintaining a minimum GPA and earning grades above C- for subject matter competency verification. Earning this degree doesn't automatically qualify students for SJSU's credential program. All applicants must meet program standards and complete the admission screening process. For details on applying to credential programs, refer to the How to Become a Teacher guide.
