This program is tailored for students pursuing careers in teaching history, political science (government), economics, or ethnic studies at the secondary or middle school level. The curriculum fulfills San José State University's BA requirements for Social Science Teacher Preparation. Administered by the Department of History, this California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC)-approved program enables graduates to bypass the CSET for Social Science exam typically required for teaching credentials.
While maintaining a 2.75 GPA and program completion are necessary, they don't ensure admission to credential programs. Applicants must meet all standard admission criteria and undergo screening. For credential program details, refer to Teaching: How to Become a Teacher in California.
The SJSU History Department provides undergraduate and graduate programs emphasizing critical reading, source analysis, evidence-based argumentation, and persuasive communication. Alumni frequently enter teaching but also pursue diverse careers in law, journalism, arts, museums, libraries, government, business, and nonprofits. Students can access internships and participate in Phi Alpha Theta honor society events. The SSTP program specifically prepares future educators, while our graduate studies focus on U.S., European, and World history. MA graduates often teach in local secondary schools and community colleges. Faculty and students leverage resources including the MLK Library and regional archives like History San José, California History Center, Hoover Institution, and Bancroft Library for their research.
Students must Earn a high school diploma, or equivalent and earn the equivalent of a U.S. 2.87 grade point average (GPA) or an average of “B” grades. Successfully complete three years of college preparatory mathematics with a minimum grade of “C-” or better.
English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0, TOEFL – 61 (IBT), Paper based – 500; Pearson Test of English (PTE) – 44.
