Physics serves as the foundation of scientific understanding, explaining phenomena from chemical interactions and protein structures to planetary interiors and stellar evolution. Physicists have pioneered groundbreaking technologies like semiconductors, lasers, and electron microscopes. Their expertise is crucial in spacecraft engineering and the creation of advanced electronic and optical devices. The Physics and Astronomy Department provides an MS program along with two undergraduate options: (1) a BS degree tailored for applied physics careers or graduate studies, and (2) a BA program that blends rigorous physics training with elective courses for dual specialization in fields like computer science, chemistry, science education, or mathematics. Faculty specialize in diverse areas including laser technology, computational physics, materials science, astrophysics, and physics education research.
This program specifically caters to aspiring middle and high school science educators. Participants can accumulate credits toward their single-subject teaching credential during undergraduate studies. The outlined curriculum fulfills San José State University's BA in Physics requirements through the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Note that subject matter competency verification may require maintaining a minimum GPA. Program completion doesn't ensure credential program acceptance—all candidates must meet standard admission criteria and undergo evaluation. For credential program details and application procedures, consult Teaching: How to Become a Teacher in California (see Teaching section).
Students must Earn a high school diploma, or equivalent and earn the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or an average of “B” grades. Successfully complete three years of college preparatory mathematics with a minimum grade of “C-” or better.
English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0, TOEFL – 61 (IBT), Paper based – 500; Pearson Test of English (PTE) – 44.
