The Master of Science in Industrial Organizational Psychology (I/O) program at SF State has operated since the 1960s. This two-year curriculum demands 37 graduate units, a 300-hour practical internship, and a final capstone project. Rooted in the scientist-practitioner approach, it prepares students for professional careers or further academic pursuits in I/O psychology. The program prioritizes psychological theory and empirical research, maintaining that true expertise emerges from mastering fundamental principles, methodologies, and field studies. Students join from across the nation and internationally, with approximately 80% holding undergraduate psychology degrees. Many applicants bring research experience, HR backgrounds, or organizational consulting work. Annually, 9-12 new candidates begin the program, maintaining an active enrollment of 18-24 graduate students at any time due to its two-year structure.
