The Bachelor of Arts in English program usually covers foundational courses in language analysis, critical thinking and writing techniques, and diverse approaches to literary and linguistic research. Each specialization aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of a key English studies discipline while demonstrating how other related fields can enhance their chosen focus. Prospective secondary school teachers should consult with a department credential advisor early in their program planning. Admission to the Secondary Education Credential program mandates specific coursework and competency evaluations. Literature, Linguistics, and Individual Major concentrations require 45 total units: six lower-division prerequisites, 15 core units, 21 concentration units, and a three-unit capstone project. The English Education concentration involves six lower-division prerequisites, 12 core units, 23-26 concentration units (including a capstone), plus 12-22 units in a chosen emphasis area.
