The Italian studies program provides instruction in fundamental language skills including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension, along with extensive knowledge of literature, culture, history, and Italian academic disciplines. This program serves as excellent preparation for specialized careers. While some students pursue Italian to teach the language, others in fields like music, art, cinema, archaeology, global affairs, history, commerce, and comparative literature - as well as aspiring translators and interpreters - find Italian highly beneficial. Certain students enroll simply for cultural enrichment, particularly those of Italian descent. Studying Italian also creates opportunities at the CSU International Program in Florence, various Italian art and professional institutes, and Italian universities where students can study diverse subjects. The major requires 30 upper-division units, with up to 14 lower-division units or equivalent language proficiency needed for admission. Proficiency can be shown through completing prerequisite courses or testing out of them.
