The School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences provides a 48-unit combined graduate program that culminates in earning both a Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology, known as our dual Master's program. Upon degree completion, official SDSU transcripts display the designation: MS in Nutritional Sciences & Exercise Physiology. Graduates receive two separate diplomas (one for MS in Nutritional Science and another for MS in Exercise Physiology).
This curriculum encompasses diverse coursework in exercise and nutritional sciences, preparing students for careers in preventive, clinical, corporate, or rehabilitative settings. The program explores the interconnected relationships between exercise and nutrition in health maintenance, aging processes, disease prevention, and rehabilitation through robust theoretical foundations and practical applications.
Participants can pursue research in specialized aspects of food science, nutrition, and exercise physiology, as well as interdisciplinary studies bridging these connected fields. Research concentrations align with faculty specializations, covering topics such as childhood, elderly, and ethnic nutrition; bone health and metabolic function; exercise thermoregulation; cholesterol and energy metabolism; the role of exercise and nutrition in chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, inflammatory disorders, obesity, and cancer; as well as athletic performance and fitness in aging athletes.
