The program emphasizes social-emotional growth and understanding child development within various settings (such as early education programs, schools, families, and communities). This graduate program prepares students for doctoral studies in related fields while enhancing professional skills and qualifications in child and family services.
The Master of Science in child development is one of just two such programs offered within the California State University system. Given California's 101 community college child development programs (established under the Ryan Act) and 17 CSU undergraduate programs, this graduate program serves a vital role in preparing professionals for the state and surrounding areas. The Department of Child and Family Development leads efforts to align curriculum between community colleges and the CSU system.
