San Diego State University's Biology Department provides outstanding degree programs instructed by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. The department supports around 1,300 undergraduate Biology and Microbiology majors, 80 minors, 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers a diverse curriculum covering cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and allied subjects. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from over 50 courses, most featuring class sizes under 30 students or lab sections with fewer than 25 participants. Our department stands out for its extensive lab and field-based course offerings compared to peer institutions. Graduate students lead lower division labs, while professors frequently teach upper division labs personally. With our strong focus on hands-on laboratory experiences, practical activities, and research opportunities, graduates gain exceptional preparation for careers in biology, health professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
