The SDSU Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Musical Theatre has empowered countless students to build enduring careers as influential figures in the musical theater industry. Our alumni now hold teaching positions in musical theater programs at educational institutions across the globe, while others have flourished as professional actors, directors, choreographers, musical directors, producers, casting professionals, and playwrights.
At SDSU, students work to excel in both the professional musical theater realm and academic university environment. Our seasoned faculty collaborates with students, honing the essential abilities required for success and ensuring musical theater's legacy continues with future generations of performers. Launched in 1982 as the pioneering MFA program in Musical Theatre, this curriculum stands out for blending practical performance education with scholarly research. The intensive two-year MFA requires students to finish 60 credit units across four consecutive 15-week terms, with a summer hiatus dedicated to completing a theater internship.
