Our programs aim to teach students and the broader community about language's essence, organization, and role as a fundamental human characteristic. Since language research intersects with multiple fields (including psychology, social sciences, cognitive science, philosophy, literature, cultural studies, education, and computer science), it inherently requires interdisciplinary approaches and thrives when combining diverse viewpoints. The Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages provides graduate programs culminating in a Master of Arts in linguistics. This 31-unit, cross-disciplinary curriculum offers comprehensive learning through two focused tracks. Both programs feature specialized coursework that expands upon foundational studies in linguistic theory.
