The Graphic Design program focuses on equipping students with industry-relevant skills to create targeted visual communications. Through hands-on projects, students master design fundamentals, communication theories, and creative problem-solving techniques while considering human cognitive, social, and cultural factors. Beyond core competencies, our curriculum examines evolving design methodologies and theoretical frameworks, emphasizing graphic design's cultural impact, technological possibilities, and communicative power.
The curriculum progresses through foundational studios covering design basics, typography, visual creation, and historical context, building conceptual and technical abilities across multiple platforms. Upperclass students tackle current design challenges by collaborating with diverse clients, businesses, and community partners via our Internship and Design Studio initiatives.
Graduates complete the program with a professional-quality portfolio ready for junior design roles. We maintain strong ties to the design industry through AIGA partnerships and global connections via faculty and student exchanges. Our diverse student body and San Diego's unique position bordering Mexico and the Pacific Rim foster a vibrant multicultural setting for creative discovery.
