The Biology Department at San Diego State University provides outstanding academic programs with instruction from more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. We support and guide around 1300 undergraduate Biology and Microbiology majors, 80 minors, over 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers a diverse curriculum covering cellular/molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and allied subjects. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from 50+ courses, most featuring class sizes under 30 or lab sections with fewer than 25 students. Our department stands out with an exceptional number of hands-on lab and field courses compared to peer institutions. Graduate students instruct all lower-division labs (never undergraduates), while faculty often teach upper-division labs directly.
Our strong focus on laboratory work, practical experiences, and research opportunities gives graduates exceptional preparation for biology careers, health professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
