San Diego State University's Biology Department provides outstanding degree programs instructed by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. The department supports around 1,300 undergraduate Biology and Microbiology majors, 80 minors, over 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers a diverse curriculum covering cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and allied subjects. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from more than 50 courses, most featuring class sizes under 30 or lab sections with fewer than 25 students. The department stands out for its extensive lab and field-based courses compared to peer institutions. Graduate students lead lower division labs, while professors frequently teach upper division labs. With its strong focus on hands-on learning, laboratory experiences, and research opportunities, the program equips graduates exceptionally well for careers in biology, health professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
