San Diego State University's Biology Department provides outstanding academic programs led by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. We support and guide around 1,300 undergraduate students majoring in Biology and Microbiology, 80 minors, over 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers a diverse curriculum covering cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and allied subjects. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from more than 50 courses, most featuring small class sizes under 30 students or lab sections with fewer than 25 participants. Our department stands out for its extensive lab and field-based course offerings compared to peer institutions. Graduate students instruct lower-division labs (instead of undergraduates), while professors often lead upper-division labs personally. With our strong focus on hands-on learning, laboratory experiences, and research opportunities, our graduates gain exceptional preparation for careers in biology, healthcare professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
