Economics examines how goods and services are produced, distributed, and consumed. Students in this field investigate decision-making processes among producers, distributors, and consumers while analyzing the causes and effects of these choices. The economics program at SDSU covers diverse aspects including inflation, unemployment, taxation, monetary systems, efficiency, global trade, and economic growth.

The Economics Department provides two specialized tracks to accommodate various career aspirations: (1) International Economics, concentrating on global economic policies and business, and (2) Public Policy, preparing students for advanced studies in law, healthcare administration, or business. Additionally, a Quantitative Analysis specialization develops mathematical and analytical abilities for economic research. Students may also choose a comprehensive general economics program that incorporates elements from all focus areas.

Graduates can pursue careers in government, finance, corporations, or international organizations. Pairing an economics major with business studies opens diverse professional opportunities. The discipline proves valuable for examining developing countries, environmental issues, government regulations, or demographic trends. Bachelor's degree holders qualify for numerous entry-level roles in business and government sectors, such as research, statistical analysis, or pricing positions. Financial institutions often offer management training programs. The Public Policy track specifically prepares students for legal studies or administrative careers, emphasizing communication and analytical abilities while requiring coursework on regulatory frameworks and policy organizations.
