The social work program consists of 42 credits in core subjects, including studies on human behavior within social contexts and four practical courses focused on working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. In their final year, students complete two semesters of supervised fieldwork at a social service agency under the guidance of a seasoned professional. The remaining credits toward the 120-hour degree requirement are fulfilled through university core classes and electives.
For those seeking international learning opportunities, SLU offers diverse study abroad options, including a campus in Madrid, Spain. Social work majors can participate in an intensive two-week program in Belize, Ghana, Ireland, Cuba, or India, combining academic study with cultural immersion and local engagement. Throughout these experiences, students receive mentorship from BSSW field instructors while contributing to community-based social work initiatives.
