A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program trains advanced practice nurses to specialize in psychiatric and behavioral health services. The curriculum provides nurses with essential clinical competencies to deliver holistic mental healthcare for patients of all ages.

Those who complete the DNP in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program gain the qualifications for leadership positions, helping improve mental healthcare systems, policies, and evidence-based treatment approaches.

Saginaw Valley State University's DNP program requires at least 75 credits for BSN-to-DNP PMHNP candidates and 51 credits for MSN-to-DNP PMHNP candidates, with a gap analysis conducted. Students must fulfill 1,000 post-baccalaureate clinical/practice hours, including 750 direct patient care hours, before graduating. The program must be finished within seven years from the initial DNP course enrollment at SVSU.

DNP Essay Goal Statement with literature support - 1000 to 1250 words in length following APA format including four scholarly references from the literature.

Provide your reason(s) for pursuing a DNP practice degree.
Identify your professional career plans and goals.
Include potential interest areas for the doctoral project.
Explain your understanding of the DNP degree and the purpose of a practice doctorate degree.
Discussion with the Graduate Nursing Coordinator.
Letters of recommendation are not required but may be requested at the discretion of the graduate nursing coordinator.
