SVSU's Creative Writing Program provides students with the opportunity to pursue either a major or minor in this dynamic field. The curriculum helps writers refine their craft through specialized courses in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Participants can explore unique subjects like Flash Fiction, Fiction Aesthetics, Poetry Collections, and Extended Poetic Forms. Majors complete their studies with an intensive capstone seminar. Alongside creative writing classes, students broaden their literary knowledge through diverse literature courses and enhance practical abilities via the Rhetoric and Professional Writing Program. These comprehensive programs equip graduates for advanced study in creative writing or various professional paths. Alumni have excelled in prestigious MFA programs and entered fields such as corporate communications, content creation, design consulting, journalism, and more.

With the exception of ENGL 201, no English course can fulfill requirements for both an English major and minor or for dual English majors. This restriction doesn't apply to interdisciplinary or certificate programs. The English department chair or their designate may approve substitutions for required courses.
