Our Optical Engineering program stands among a select group of undergraduate offerings nationwide. This unique degree pathway leads to diverse career opportunities across multiple sectors, such as automated quality control, consumer tech, fiber optic networks, precision instrumentation, laser technology, radar development, and digital storage solutions.
The study of light, once limited to scientific laboratories and speculative fiction, now permeates our daily experiences. Optical innovations appear in countless applications we encounter regularly. Common implementations include laser printing technology, fiber-based data transmission, digital network routing, fiber-optic phone systems, media playback devices, security holograms on payment cards, retail barcode scanners, computing systems, and vision correction procedures. As a foundational technology, optics continues expanding rapidly. Optical methods now support diverse fields including land surveying, construction engineering, material analysis, structural stress measurement, fluid dynamics monitoring, telecommunications, automated visual inspection, industrial laser processing, information storage solutions, network infrastructure, photonic computing, and sensor development. Industry reports indicate steadily increasing demand for optical specialists annually. Graduates with Optical Engineering qualifications find employment prospects across numerous sectors, from automated manufacturing to consumer electronics, fiber optic networks, precision instruments, laser systems, radar technology, and data storage solutions.
Rose-Hulman's bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering represents one of the nation's exclusive undergraduate programs. The curriculum prepares students equally well for advanced optics studies or direct industry entry. Our faculty designed the program with guidance from industry professionals and leading optics educators worldwide. Given optics' broad applications, the coursework blends physics and mathematics with humanities and social sciences. The Optical Engineering program emphasizes hands-on laboratory learning. We actively support students pursuing dual majors, particularly combining Optical Engineering with electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering disciplines.
