RIT's medical illustration program trains you to become an expert visual communicator, capable of converting intricate medical concepts into clear visual representations for education, research, patient care, marketing, and legal applications. As a medical illustrator, you'll develop expertise in biomedical sciences, modern digital media, and visual storytelling techniques. This prestigious program is one of just five accredited medical illustration degrees in North America and the only one in the northeastern United States. The curriculum integrates hands-on study of human anatomy (including cadaver dissection observation in RIT's specialized lab), immunology, cellular biology, and disease processes with comprehensive instruction in digital graphics, interactive media, and animation techniques. Working alongside healthcare professionals and researchers, medical illustrators create visual materials that enhance medical education, scientific discovery, patient understanding, and legal proceedings. Students develop illustrations for diverse platforms including print publications, presentations, video productions, and digital media.
This intensive two-year graduate program leads to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. The curriculum focuses on developing strategic visualization skills to effectively communicate challenging scientific concepts. Students gain practical experience through collaborations with medical professionals and surgical observation opportunities. The program concludes with an in-depth thesis project, involving thorough research and the creation of original artwork addressing a sophisticated medical subject.
