RIT's interactive development program in new media harnesses digital technologies for social platforms, wearable tech, touchscreen interfaces, VR/AR systems, and beyond. Through RIT's new media interactive development program, students master programming and computational abilities for diverse interfaces while gaining interactive design expertise to craft exceptional user experiences. Students can specialize in particular new media domains to deeply pursue their passions and apply their skills across evolving technological frontiers. New media represents a dynamic digital communication medium that captivates, involves, and frequently delights audiences.
The concept of new media originated in the 1980s to describe computing's growing influence on conventional media channels such as print, radio, and broadcast television. As digital platforms expanded past web-based applications, new media broadened to include all computer-accessed information and entertainment across devices like smartphones and tablets. Today's new media spans any technology merging communication, computation, and digital innovation - from social networks (Facebook, Instagram) and streaming platforms (Spotify, Hulu) to highly engaging technologies including wearables (Apple Watch, FitBit), virtual/augmented reality, and interactive gaming.
