The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) for Experienced Teachers is a 36-credit, non-thesis graduate program designed to address the professional development needs of working educators. This flexible program allows participants to pursue Texas principal certification as an optional component. The curriculum blends professional education courses, advanced subject-area studies, and either a capstone project or principal practicum. Our faculty provide personalized guidance, mentorship, and support throughout the program, creating a tailored learning experience that emphasizes excellence in teaching methods and leadership development. Students are challenged to examine their teaching experiences while applying new knowledge from coursework to their professional practice. Qualification Requirements

The program is designed for students holding bachelor's degrees who are interested in pursuing graduate study in education while preparing for teacher certification at the secondary level.

Official transcripts of previous university studies which reflect a minimum of 24 hours of content area courses in your selected teaching field
Four letters of reference accompanied by the forms provided in the application packet (minimum of two references must be academic)
Overall 3.0 GPA or higher
Minimum 2.5 GPA in content area
Demonstrated content knowledge
24 credit hours in content area, or
Minimum 12 credit hours in content area (15 for math and science) and Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT)
Graduate Record Examination score (no more than 5 years old, scores must be at or above the 70th percentile)
Passing scores on (or documented exemption from) the THEA test
Bachelor's (undergraduate) degree earned or will be earned before entering. In general, applicants should have at least a 3.0(B) grade point average (or the equivalent) in their undergraduate work. Some departments at Rice University require scores on the aptitude portion of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) as an appropriate advanced test, these should be sent directly to the admitting department. Applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL test and should score at least 90 on the iBT (internet-based) TOEFL, at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL or score 250 on the computer-based TOEFL. For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7.
