Buddhist literature emerged from the philosophical and yogic traditions of ancient India, quickly facing the need to develop its own distinct theories. Just as important was Buddhism's requirement to formulate ethical frameworks, explanations of human agency, knowledge systems, and meditation practices while upholding its core principle of no-self (antman) - a direct challenge to the prevailing Indian concepts of self (tman). This literary tradition swiftly expanded to encompass diverse schools exploring logic, meditation, epistemology, and cosmology, alongside historical accounts, life stories, debate manuals, and philosophical treatises.
