After earning a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, graduates will possess the ability to: Show expertise in advanced mechanical engineering concepts. Utilize technical knowledge and perform research exhibiting deep specialization in a mechanical engineering subdiscipline. Present scientific concepts clearly through both written and oral communication. The required coursework for PhD candidates (with most courses counting as three semester hours) varies based on prior degrees: 18 hours for those entering with an MS, 30 hours for five-year BS holders, 36 hours for four-year BS graduates, and 42 hours for BA recipients. Each student's academic plan is developed with their thesis advisor and requires departmental approval.

Undergraduate degree earned or will be earned before entering in an engineering related field.
Minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B), or the equivalent.
GRE general test scores taken within the last five years. (Note: For the fall 2021 application cycle the GRE is optional but still strongly recommended when possible.)
There are no published required minimum scores.
Recommendation from at least three people who know your academic achievements.
TOEFL score if your native language is not English. The minimum score is 90 on Internet-based, 250 on computer-based, and 600 on the paper-based test. IELTS (minimum score of 7) is acceptable in lieu of TOEFL
