Ph.D. candidates enrolled full-time should fulfill all degree requirements within five years of starting the program. Extending beyond this period requires departmental authorization. The Ph.D. program mandates completion of 90 credit hours of advanced study, including a minimum of 18 coursework credits. MSNE graduate students cannot receive credit for courses that are part of Rice's MSNE undergraduate curriculum, with the exception of MSNE 401. Note that MSNE 401 cannot be applied toward graduate credits if it was previously used to satisfy undergraduate requirements. Graduates with a Ph.D. in Materials Science and NanoEngineering will achieve the following competencies: Exhibit expert-level knowledge in Materials Science and NanoEngineering practice. Perform autonomous research showcasing specialized expertise in a Materials Science or NanoEngineering subdiscipline. Effectively convey scientific concepts through written and oral communication.
