Theatre majors dedicate their studies to visual and dramatic arts, specializing in areas like acting, directing, stage management, costume design, lighting design, or theatre technology. This program blends hands-on practice with theoretical knowledge and performance techniques, providing students with a comprehensive education. Coursework covers stagecraft (including costume construction and technical theatre), acting or design, theatre history, and production work. Students also have the option to take electives in studio arts, critical theory, photography, or film studies.

During their junior year, students can join a yearly trip to notable art, theatre, and film destinations across the U.S., enhancing their artistic learning. Participation earns academic credit through special topics enrollment.

Theatre majors are urged to broaden their education by taking relevant courses in other disciplines, such as philosophy, anthropology, science, history, cultural studies, creative writing, or comparative literature. Consultation with a faculty advisor is recommended before registration.

The Rice Theatre Program stages two annual productions (one each semester), offering majors practical experience as performers, designers, or technicians. Students are also encouraged to engage with local theatre organizations through volunteer work, internships, or fellowships. Past internships have included opportunities with the Alley Theatre, Houston Shakespeare Festival, and Theatre Under the Stars.
