This research-focused degree emphasizes generating novel insights within the student's selected field. It requires completing a dissertation that thoroughly records the student's original research contributions. The Ph.D. curriculum demands 72 credit hours post-bachelor's degree, with up to 30 credits allocated for dissertation work and at least 42 credits for coursework. Students with a master's degree may transfer 24 credits toward the 42-credit coursework requirement. Beyond standard doctoral examinations, Civil and Environmental Engineering candidates must pass a qualifying exam - by their second semester for those with applicable master's credits, or by their fourth semester otherwise. Students must: achieve mastery in Civil and Environmental Engineering fundamentals; develop competence in research methodologies (theoretical, computational, and experimental); hone professional communication abilities; and publish original findings in academic venues.
