Our biology Ph.D. program equips students for research-focused careers across academic, governmental, and private sector settings. To earn the doctorate, students must meet Graduate Program Committee (GPC) requirements: completing the first-year Core Course (which functions as a qualifying exam) with a B grade or higher, and passing two graduate electives (minimum 3 credits each, including one 6000-level course and one in BIOL or BCBP). First-year students undertake three lab rotations. By the second semester's end, they must select a thesis advisor from approved faculty. The program requires passing a comprehensive candidacy exam (written and oral components) by the second year's conclusion. Doctoral candidates must produce an original research dissertation, deliver a public presentation of their findings, and successfully defend their work orally. Teaching participation for at least one semester under faculty guidance is mandatory. The Ph.D. requires completion of 72 credit hours.
