The foundational tenets of criminal law have been deeply embedded in American culture since the nation's founding, when constitutional framers established fundamental rights like free expression, protection from self-incrimination, and safeguards against unlawful searches. This program provides comprehensive training in criminal law theory and practice while investigating diverse offenses ranging from corporate financial misconduct to digital crimes and human exploitation.
Students master advanced trial techniques, including modern visual persuasion methods for legal proceedings, while analyzing ethical dilemmas specific to criminal law environments. Through hands-on clinics and externships, participants gain practical experience across the justice system - whether prosecuting cases, mounting defenses, assisting judicial officers, or representing clients at various court levels. Opportunities exist to contribute to national reform initiatives, such as improving juvenile justice systems or opposing capital punishment.
Practical skills development occurs through simulated trials and courtroom exercises, complemented by our annual Northeast Regional Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition. The Criminal Law Society facilitates numerous professional networking events to help students establish connections within the legal field.
