Secondary teachers are deeply enthusiastic about their disciplines and strive to share that enthusiasm with their students. Our Dual-Degree Master of Arts in Teaching program equips you with the expertise and practical skills to make a meaningful difference in the lives of middle and high school students.
This accelerated MAT program allows you to earn both your bachelor's and master's degrees while qualifying for secondary teaching certification (grades 7-12) in just five years. During your initial year, you'll choose a specialization from these options: biology, English, history, Spanish, or mathematics. Your chosen major will form the foundation for teaching that subject at the secondary level. The program includes advanced graduate coursework in your specialization along with essential teaching methods to develop lesson planning skills, classroom management techniques, and contemporary educational strategies.
Starting in your first year, you'll enroll in ED 140: Introduction to Public Education. This introductory 1-credit course orients you to the teaching profession and guides you through educational pathways, including course requirements, certification processes, interstate reciprocity, additional endorsements, and state education department regulations. You'll examine both historical and current educational trends and challenges.
During your second year, you'll complete core courses focusing on educational diversity and philosophical foundations. These initial classes help establish connections with faculty while increasing your participation in School of Education activities and organizations. In spring semester of sophomore year, your academic progress undergoes formal evaluation through a meeting with education faculty. Maintaining a 3.0 GPA and sustained teaching motivation will qualify you to progress in the 4+1 dual-degree program.
