Elementary educators do more than teach core subjects like literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies—they also nurture students' social-emotional development. QU's program covers lesson design, classroom leadership, and inclusive teaching strategies to help you effectively engage every learner.
This accelerated program lets you earn both a bachelor's degree in any field and a master's in teaching with elementary certification (grades 1-6) within five years. By completing graduate studies immediately after undergraduate work, you can seamlessly continue your teaching career, meeting most states' licensure requirements that mandate a master's degree within the first 6-8 years of professional practice.
First-year students start with ED 140: Exploring Public Education, a 1-credit orientation to teaching careers and program pathways. This course assists with academic planning and major selection if undecided.
Sophomore year introduces two foundational courses: diversity studies and educational philosophy. These initial classes help build connections with MAT faculty and peers while encouraging participation in School of Education activities. A sophomore-year advising session with MAT faculty assesses academic progress and program continuation.
Upperclass years involve 20-hour semester field placements in public school classrooms alongside veteran teachers, complemented by advanced coursework on campus. After completing undergraduate requirements, students transition directly to graduate studies, culminating in a full-time teaching internship at a local elementary school with guidance from both a school mentor and university supervisor.
