The English program examines how literature and writing influence our perception of identity, history, and culture while opening doors to various fulfilling career paths.
Our English Department encourages students to grapple with profound literary concepts and develop articulate, expressive writing styles. Through analyzing significant prose and poetry from medieval times to today, students gain insight into different cultures, historical contexts, and sociopolitical viewpoints. In rigorous writing courses, students refine their linguistic abilities and cultivate their distinct voices as poets, fiction authors, essayists, and critics. English majors develop essential 21st-century skills including persuasive writing, analytical reading, thorough research, and innovative thinking.
As an English major, you'll collaborate with a faculty advisor to design a personalized curriculum aligned with your literary passions and professional aspirations. Our adaptable 36-credit program easily accommodates double majors or minors in related fields like law and society, psychology, theater, biology, film studies, journalism, game design, or public relations. Those drawn to creative writing can opt for a specialized concentration, customizing their coursework to support their artistic ambitions. Future secondary educators must complete a specialized curriculum that fulfills state-mandated literature knowledge requirements. The program concludes with a capstone course, where you'll create an original work showcasing your expertise and imaginative abilities.
