Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary initiative based in the Department of Classical, Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures (since January 2014). This scholarly discipline approaches religion—including sacred texts, personal experiences, rituals, and theological concepts—from an objective, academic perspective.
The Religious Studies Program incorporates faculty and coursework from both Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences, spanning fields such as anthropology, art history, history, philosophy, sociology, and particularly drawing from language and literature departments, with CMAL being prominent.
Beyond presenting diverse academic viewpoints, the program promotes examination of multiple faith traditions, featuring courses on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, ancient Roman religion, and comparative studies. Students also gain access to original language studies (Classical Chinese, Classical Arabic, Biblical Hebrew, and Latin) for exploring historical religious texts.
