The Physics Department provides Master of Science in Photonics (Professional Science Master's) and Master of Arts in Physics programs, along with Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees (featuring both Applied Physics and standard tracks). Additionally, it offers a Physics minor, a major in physics education, and a pre-engineering pathway. The Photonics MS Program equips students for direct entry into technology-driven industries, offering expertise in contemporary optics, measurement methods, photonic systems, and essential business acumen for high-tech sectors. For further insights into photonics career opportunities, visit the National Photonics Initiative website. This MS program is designed with flexibility, allowing completion through evening classes. The Physics MA serves as a conventional graduate program, ideal for those preparing for Physics or Engineering PhD studies, enhancing analytical abilities for fields like quantitative finance or actuarial science, or pursuing secondary education teaching roles. While the BS and BA in Physics vary in intensity, both lay a strong foundation for diverse technical professions, advanced studies in physics or engineering, or careers in science education. The pre-engineering option enables students to earn a BA in Physics with an Applied Physics focus before transitioning to Columbia University's engineering programs, potentially obtaining dual degrees in physics and engineering.
