Linguistics involves the systematic examination of language. Queens College offers a distinctive opportunity to investigate this remarkable human capacity in a setting often referred to as the Global Language Hub, surrounded by diverse students and faculty fluent in multiple languages and dialects.
Our curriculum stands out for its emphasis on undergraduate research. As a General Linguistics major, you'll actively generate new insights. Several students have participated in building the CUNY Corpus of New York City English, while others have studied prominent languages in NYC such as Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Polish, and West Indian Creoles. Additional research has focused on preserving endangered languages brought by immigrants worldwide - potentially including those spoken by you, your relatives, or community members.
Regardless of your research focus, you'll acquire valuable skills in formulating inquiries, designing methodologies, evaluating resources, processing information, interpreting results, and communicating discoveries. These competencies are highly sought after in professional settings and can provide advantages in spearheading initiatives, whether language-related or otherwise.
