The School of Languages and Cultures provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, specializing in French, German, and Spanish literature. For Japanese studies, students can pursue an M.A. in Second Language Acquisition and Pedagogy. The school also contributes to the Comparative Literature Program's M.A. and Ph.D. curricula. Applied linguistics and linguistic graduate studies are offered through the College of Liberal Arts' School of Interdisciplinary Studies. The M.A. requires at least 30 graduate credit hours (24 for thesis-track students), while the Ph.D. demands 60 post-baccalaureate course hours plus a 30-credit dissertation. Full-time M.A. candidates typically finish in four semesters. Degree candidates gain teaching experience at the college level. With an excellent faculty-to-student ratio, the program ensures personalized academic advising and maintains intimate graduate class sizes.
