The interdisciplinary science major offers College of Science students a comprehensive foundation across scientific disciplines. This program blends a primary science focus, an interdisciplinary core curriculum, a complementary academic interest area, and the shared College of Science requirements, enabling students to examine how scientific fields collaborate to address complex challenges. Participants personalize their degree by choosing either a departmental or cross-departmental primary science concentration paired with a supporting field that strengthens their main focus. This secondary area can be an approved minor from any university department or a cohesive 18-credit course cluster. While primary options exist for each College of Science department, students can propose innovative cross-disciplinary concentrations. Working with faculty or advisors, learners may submit petitions for approval of their chosen supporting field.
This major provides students with extensive scientific knowledge while allowing deeper specialization in both a Primary Science Area and a Supporting Area, often from outside traditional science disciplines. While core requirements remain consistent, students tailor their path by selecting either a science-based departmental or interdisciplinary Primary Area coupled with a Supporting Area from any university college. The program includes department-specific Primary Areas while remaining flexible to incorporate emerging interdisciplinary fields. Suggested Supporting Areas are available, though students may propose and seek approval for alternative options.
