The Fields and Optics (FO) specialization comprises 14 core faculty members and 13 affiliated faculty who investigate electromagnetic waves through both experimental and theoretical approaches. These waves are pervasive, covering a wide spectrum of phenomena encountered in numerous settings, including daily life, spanning from radio waves to optics and further. In radio frequencies, uses involve cellular networks, radio devices, radar systems, remote controls, integrated circuit design, and various wireless communication and sensing methods. Optical applications encompass lasers, LEDs, fiber optics for telecommunications, smartphone cameras, medical sensors, photovoltaics and other renewable energy sources, nano and quantum photonics, photonic materials, manufacturing and quality assurance, telescopes, microscopes, and many others. FO research is also anticipated to contribute significantly to emerging technologies like 5G, quantum information, quantum computing, self-driving cars, video calling systems, and portable health monitors.
