Architectural Engineering (ArchE) focuses on the comprehensive design, construction, and management of buildings. It encompasses all engineering disciplines tied to the built environment, such as structural systems, HVAC, electrical networks, illumination, construction methods, indoor air quality, and occupant comfort—making it inherently interdisciplinary in both research and education.
In the U.S., buildings consume over 35% of total energy and contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Given growing climate awareness and fluctuating energy costs, Architectural Engineers face pivotal challenges in the coming years. Within Civil Engineering's Architectural Engineering specialization, students explore how to harmonize diverse building systems while prioritizing sustainability and energy conservation. The program offers adaptable coursework covering energy-efficient design, electrical/mechanical systems, lighting solutions, building exteriors, automation technologies, renewable energy integration, air quality management, and energy simulation. A minor in Architectural Engineering is open to all College of Engineering students, excluding those enrolled in Civil Engineering.
