Interior design focuses on addressing challenges tied to enhancing people's built environments to create functional interior spaces. These solutions serve practical purposes while improving occupants' lifestyles and cultural experiences through visually pleasing designs. Purdue's interior design curriculum equips students with analytical abilities and hands-on training to design spaces for commercial, institutional, healthcare, retail, and residential settings. The program nurtures innovative designers capable of developing and implementing creative solutions that meet evolving physical, social, and psychological needs in our fast-paced technological world. The program holds accreditation from CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation).
The curriculum blends creative experimentation, professional training, technical knowledge, and practical skills, with particular focus on interior construction, building systems, regulations, fixtures, and materials, along with accessibility considerations and eco-friendly approaches.
Important portfolio requirement notice - No art portfolio is needed initially for this major. However, students must successfully complete a competitive portfolio evaluation during their second-year spring semester to progress to advanced design courses and complete the degree. Selection depends on the quality of work produced in Purdue's art and design classes and the student's design growth. Those not advancing to upper-level Interior Design collaborate with advisors to transition to their alternative major choice.
