The Psychology Department's graduate program focuses on training students for careers in psychological research and teaching, offering specializations in key areas including cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, language studies, learning and memory, perception and cognition, inequality psychology, social neuroscience, social psychology, and systems neuroscience. This program aims to equip students for earning a Ph.D. and pursuing scholarly work in psychology. During their first year, students collaborate closely with faculty advisors to develop research projects and start their academic coursework. In the second year, they focus on research activities, compile findings into a written report, and create a theoretical framework for their chosen field. Cross-departmental seminars and courses may also be taken. The third year starts with comprehensive exams, followed by intensive research and advanced studies through specialized courses, independent reading, and seminars. The fourth and fifth years are primarily dedicated to mastering research methodologies, presenting dissertation proposals to faculty committees, conducting thesis-related research, and writing the dissertation. Students are encouraged to publish their research findings regularly throughout their graduate studies. The doctoral program culminates in a public oral defense, where students present their dissertation's research questions, methodologies, results, and their contribution to ongoing psychological research challenges.
