The Princeton Neuroscience Institute's Ph.D. program aims to equip researchers with the skills to tackle these foundational, unresolved scientific questions. Participants master cutting-edge neuroscience methodologies while developing critical thinking abilities to pioneer novel techniques. Innovation and creative problem-solving prove vital for deciphering the brain's complexities. Neuroscience doctoral candidates engage in coursework, literature analysis, original research projects, and academic presentations. Princeton's program emphasizes experiential learning - first-year students complete an intensive Core Course combining theoretical instruction with practical laboratory work. This immersive curriculum teaches essential skills like conducting fMRI studies, designing neural network simulations, observing live neural activity, and performing single-cell patch-clamping. No prior lab experience is necessary. Students explore diverse research opportunities through rotations in up to three laboratories, often uncovering unexpected passions. After rotations, candidates select a primary research lab through mutual agreement with their faculty advisor to conduct their doctoral studies.
