The Department of French and Italian (FIT) provides undergraduate students with outstanding opportunities to explore the vibrant literature and cultures of French and Italian-speaking regions. Our 16 full-time faculty members, with half being native French or Italian speakers, comprise internationally renowned scholars specializing in diverse fields from medieval literature to modern cinema. The department regularly enhances its curriculum with distinguished visiting professors.
Our Language Programs deliver comprehensive instruction in both languages at beginner and intermediate levels, alongside engaging interdisciplinary courses covering French and Italian languages, literature, and cultures. We take pride in fostering a nurturing academic atmosphere where certificate students and concentrators receive personalized guidance from readily available advisors. The concentration features tailored study plans along with extensive research resources and support.
We aim to help students not only master language skills but also develop critical cultural understanding within their own contextual framework. Learners engage with authentic materials like literary texts, films, television programs, news media, and digital content. They explore diverse cultural contributions including visual arts, cinema, music, popular culture, sociology, political science, and culinary traditions. Through these experiences, students enhance their ability to analyze and create meaning across various cultural texts and productions. All instruction occurs in the target language, prioritizing interactive communication activities alongside rigorous language training.

Qualification Requirements

Academic record is evaluated within the context of your educational system and school curriculum. Your academic record should include any available internal grades from classes, achieved marks from external exams (for example: (I)GCSE, British A-Level, International Baccalaureate, national leaving exams such as Std X/Std XII in India), or a combination of both.

If English is not your native language and you are attending a school where English is not the language of instruction, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic) or the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic). You are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic if English is your native language or if you have spent at least three years at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction.
